How the Dream Started
God called Ron to Ecuador while on the plane ride home after a short-term missions trip to Ecuador with his church. He left his home, medical practice and math/chemistry professorship and has been a missionary in Ecuador since 2006 (starting in the jungles). He is an optometrist and used those skills to usher Jesus into the hearts of people in need of eyeglasses and basic medical necessities. This was the start of doing free medical brigades/outreaches. The concept grew as he taught others how to set up a medical outreach. Ron saw the need for providing pastors basic medical training (who are normally the first responders in their villages) as well as nursing students – so he wrote five health promoters books in Spanish and began to train. He’s trained hundreds using these materials. Now many are taking the materials deep into the jungle to teach basic medical education which then opens the doors for people to come to Christ.
Esther received her calling to missions at the age of 12. Her calling hasn’t been to a specific country but rather going to wherever the Lord needed to use her skills. This willingness along with her missiology training and her education/administration training has led her to minister while having lived on five continents (specifically the countries of Egypt, Germany, Austria, China, Ukraine-Crimea, and now Ecuador). Esther has cross-culturally trained over 2,000 pastors and leaders up and down the Nile River. In addition, she established the Xi’an International School where she was the principal and teacher. She also was part of a team among the Muslims, a specific unreached people group. In between overseas assignments, the Lord has granted Esther the opportunity to train children and young people, instilling a passion for missions. She led them to foreign soil in order to get a taste for foreign missions. Many of those students today are serving in missions.
Ron and Esther were married in November 2011. Their lives, ministries, and worlds melded together as Esther joined Ron in Ecuador. The experience of traveling around the country while working with local churches doing medical/optical brigades has been very beneficial for Esther. She has learned a lot about Latin and indigenous cultures, their physical and spiritual needs, and has a better understanding of God’s heart for the people Ron loves.
Our Ministry. The doors have been opened to the hearts of local doctors to volunteer with us in working alongside local churches using medical/optical brigades as a tool of evangelism in their communities. People who don’t have a personal relationship with Christ have walked past church doors, having never entered, until a sign for free medical services is posted or an invitation is received by hand. Their physical needs are met, but more importantly, nearly 100% of the time they leave with their spiritual need for salvation being met as well. The pastor and church members continue with follow-up and discipleship. While ministering through medical/optical outreaches, we continue to mentor both students and volunteers who work along with us.
Our prayer is: “Oh God, what needs do You see that are not being met here in Ecuador and how can we be Your instruments?”
Cómo empezó el sueño
Dios llamó a Ron al Ecuador camino a casa después de un corto viaje misionero con su iglesia. Él dejó su casa, su consultorio y su profesorado en matemáticas y química. Ha sido misionero en Ecuador desde el año 2006 (empezó en la jungla). Ron es optometrista y ha usado su habilidad para llevar a Jesús a los corazones de las personas que necesitan lentes y cuidados médicos básicos. Este fue el comienzo de las brigadas médicas gratuitas. El concepto creció a medida que enseñaba a otros a realizarlas. Ron se percató de la necesidad de proveer a los pastores con entrenamiento médico básico (los pastores usualmente son los primeros en responder en las comunidades) y también a los estudiantes de enfermería – así que escribió cinco libros de salud en español y empezó a entrenar. Ha entrenado a cientos con este material. Ahora, muchos están llevando este material a la profundidad de la selva para proveer educación médica, la cual abre las puertas para que las personas vengan a Cristo.
Esther recibió su llamado a las misiones a la edad de doce años. Su llamado no ha sido a un país específico sino más bien de ir hacia donde el Señor necesita de sus dones. Esta disposición junto a su entrenamiento misionero y a su preparación en educación y administración la ha llevado a ministrar en cinco continentes (específicamente los paises de Egipto, Alemania, Austria, China, Ucrania-Crimea, y ahora Ecuador). Esther a entrenado a más de 2,000 pastores y líderes a lo largo del Río Nilo. Además, fundó al Escuela Internacional Xi’an donde fue directora y maestra. También fue parte de un equipo entre los musulmanes, un grupo difícilmente alcanzado. En medio de todas sus actividades, el Señor le ha dado a Esther la oportunidad de entrenar a niños y jóvenes, despertando en ellos la pasión por misiones. Los ha llevado a tierras extranjeras para que experimenten las misiones foráneas. Muchos de esos estudiantes sirven en misiones el día de hoy.
Ron y Esther se casaron en noviembre del 2011. Sus vidas, ministerios y mundos se unieron: Esther se unió a Ron en Ecuador. La experiencia de viajar alrededor del país mientras trabajan junto a iglesias locales en brigadas médicas y ópticas ha sido muy beneficiosa para Esther. Ella ha aprendido mucho sobre la cultura latina e indígena, sus necesidades físicas y espirituales, y tiene mejor entendimiento de amor de Dios sobre las personas que Ron ama.
Nuestro Ministerio. Las puertas se han abierto en los corazones de los médicos locales para trabajar junto a nosotros como voluntarios en las brigadas médicas y ópticas que realizamos junto a las iglesias locales. Esta es un herramienta de evangelismo en las comunidades. Personas que no tienen una relación personal con Cristo, que pasan junto a la iglesia y que nunca entran hasta que un aviso les indica que habrá servicios médicos gratis. Sus necesidades físicas son llenadas pero más importante es que casi 100% de las veces se van con su necesidad espiritual de salvación llena. El pastor y los miembros de la iglesia local hacen el seguimiento y el discipulado. Mientras ministramos a través de las brigadas médicas y ópticas, seguimos la tarea de educar a los estudiantes y voluntarios junto a nosotros.
Nuestra oración es: “Dios, ¿cuáles son las necesidades que ves en Ecuador y cómo podemos ser tu instrumento?”.
